Introduction
This is an exposition of Hebrews 4:13 by comparing Scripture with Scripture. It reveals the comforting and convicting truth that God sees and knows everything — nothing is hidden from His gaze.
Hebrews 4:13, “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.“
God’s All-Seeing Eyes
Job 34:21&22, “For his eyes [are] upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. [There is] no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.“
2 Chronicles 16:9a, “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of [them]whose heart [is] perfect toward him….”
Psalm 11:4, “The LORD [is] in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne [is] in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.“
Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the LORD [are] in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
Zechariah 4:10, “For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel [with] those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.“
Psalm 94:7-11, “Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard [it]. Understand, [ye] brutish among the people: and [ye] fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, [shall not he know]? The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they [are] vanity.“
No Place to Hide
Psalm 139:7&8, (Note: there are several pertinent verses in Psalm 139) “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou [art] there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou [art there].”
Jeremiah 23:23, “[Am] I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.“
Job 26:6, “Hell [is] naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.“
Jeremiah 16:17, “For mine eyes [are] upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes.“
- Matthew 10:26, “Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.“
- Mark 4:22, “For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.“
- Luke 8:17, “For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither [any thing] hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.“
God Knows the Heart and Secret Things
Psalm 44:21, “Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.“
Psalm 90:8, “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret [sins] in the light of thy countenance.”
Proverbs 15:11, “Hell and destruction [are] before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?“
Psalm 139:16, “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all [my members] were written, [which] in continuance were fashioned, when [as yet there was] none of them.“
Psalm 139:23&24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if [there be any] wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.“
The Lord Looks Down from Heaven
Psalm 66:7, “He ruleth by his power for ever; his eyes behold the nations: let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah.” Selah” means “pause” and hence to “meditate on this“
Proverbs 5:21, “For the ways of man [are] before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.”
Mark 4:22, “For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.”
We can also see that when The Word is faithfully preached, and effectuates salvation, it will result in the what we read in 1 Corinthians 14:25, “And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on [his] face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.“
1 Peter 3:12, “For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord [is] against them that do evil.“
Revelation 2:23, “And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.“
The Lord Looks Down From Heaven
Psalm 33:13&14, “The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.“
Psalm 53:1-3, “¶[[To the chief Musician upon Mahalath, Maschil, [A Psalm] of David.]] The fool hath said in his heart, [There is] no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; [there is] none that doeth good, no, not one.“
Psalm 14:2&3, “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, [and]seek God. They are all gone aside, they are [all] together become filthy: [there is] none that doeth good, no, not one.”
When God’s Word Exposes the Heart
Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.“
1 Corinthians 14:25, “And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on [his] face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.“
1 Peter 3:12, “For the eyes of the Lord [are] over the righteous, and his ears [are open] unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord [is] against them that do evil.“
Revelation 2:23, “…; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.“
Conclusion
God makes it clear, and undeniable, that He is Omniscient and completely Sovereign! This is the real and ultimate “Inconvenient Truth” Nothing escapes God’s gaze. No thought, no secret, no hidden motive, and no dark corner of our hearts or lives is concealed from God “...with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13). God’s eyes run to and fro throughout the earth, searching hearts, beholding all.
This reality brings both solemn warning and profound comfort. It warns the rebellious and the self-deceived person that there is no hiding place from God and that every evil work will be exposed on Judgment Day (and even one sin is sufficient to send a person to Hell for eternity). Yet it comforts every believer with the assurance that the same all-seeing God is also the sole means for Redemption and Salvation from all of his or her’s otherwise hidden sins, The believer knows that it is only through the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ that there is forgiveness for sin and the hope for Salvation and life eternal with Him.
So then dear reader, do you want to have your every deed and idle word examined suddenly on Judgment Day, or heed God’s command to examine yourselves NOW, whether you are in the one true faith? Only the Lord Jesus Christ can have paid the full price for a person’s life of sins, because Jesus is the only acceptable Sacrificial Lamb of God and He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.
